Vine-X Questions and answers.

What is VINE-X?

VINE-X is a self-contained, ready-to-use herbicide product designed specifically to treat nuisance vines, brush, and small trees in situations where spraying is either difficult or impractical.

How does VINE-X work?

At application, VINE-X enters the capillary system of a nuisance plant and travels to the root. There it interrupts the plant's normal growth pattern, thereby killing it.

What is the active ingredient in VINE-X?

The active ingredient is triclopyr butoxethyl ester (usually known as triclopyr BEE). This ester form is more efficient in permeating plant tissue than the typical triethylamine salt form used in water-based sprays or concentrates.

What makes VINE-X different from conventional herbicides?

Almost all standard weed killers are formulated with ordinary water as their carrier (base). However, VINE-X is formulated in a vegetable oil solution. This allows VINE-X to penetrate the waterproof outer layer of the stems and trunks of invasive vines and brush plants without the need for cutting and scraping.

What are the benefits of using VINE-X instead of sprays?

Spray weed killers are often only effective if used during the peak of the growing season. But VINE-X may be applied nearly year-round with the same results. Plus, the unique VINE-X applicator eliminates waste or spray drift that may harm nearby valuable plants.

How long does VINE-X remain active?

Once applied, the herbicide in VINE-X is active for between 30 and 60 days. This allows VINE-X to be used during times of the year when other products are not recommended for use.

Will VINE-X travel through the soil?

Upon application the herbicide "locks in" to the tissue of the nuisance plant. It does not wash off in the rain and has not been shown to travel through the ground or from the treated plant to a different plant via the root system.

During what times of the year may VINE-X be applied?

VINE-X may be applied at almost any time of the year except the dead of winter. In North America, the average application season runs from February to November.

How fast does VINE-X work?

Individual situations will vary, but typically the effects of VINE-X may be observed within several days following application. Dormant plants may not show evidence of control until the spring leaf-out period. Climactic conditions such as drought or delayed season change may also extend the observation period.

What weeds are controlled by VINE-X?

VINE-X is effective against almost all species of invasive vines and brush plants, including poison ivy, poison oak, kudzu, Virginia creeper, trumpet creeper, ailanthus, bittersweet, wild grape, multiflora rose, choke cherry, blackberry, raspberry, Brazilian pepper, and many more.

What weeds should not be treated with VINE-X?

VINE-X is not recommended for use against herbaceous pest plants, grasses, or aquatic pest plants. VINE-X should not be used to treat problem reed plants like bamboo, cattail, or phragmites. Weeds such as dandelion, crabgrass, chickweed, ground ivy, or other lawn pests should not be treated with VINE-X.

Can VINE-X be used to limit the growth of ornamental plants (such as English ivy)?

No. VINE-X should only be applied to unwanted plants which are meant to be eliminated from cultivated areas. Do not use VINE-X to regulate or contain the growth of valuable plants.

How does VINE-X compare to other weed killers?

Other weed killers are packaged either as concentrates (without an applicator), or as a ready-to-use (RTU) sprays, which are highly diluted. VINE-X gives you the power of a concentrate, combined with the convenience of an RTU.

Why is VINE-X superior for killing invasive vines and brush?

The "effective use" period of spray products or standard concentrates is limited to the growing season only. With sprays, nearby valuable plants must be protected against overspray or dripping. With concentrates the stem must be cut or scraped. Using VINE-X saves time, labor, and money, and gives gardeners greater flexibility in controlling nuisance vines and brush.
