Ulmus pumila or Siberian elm is the fastest growing hedge plant available. It is hardy, and drought resistant when established. It is also considered to be a great windbreak tree when planted in rows. This is not to be confused with the Chinese Elm which is more of a tree form then a hedge plant. It has moderate water requirements until established. It also displays a moderate tolerance of salt and alkali.
