Description

Athyrium niponicum 'Red Beauty'

In the Japanese Painted Ferns family, the Red Beauty is a lovely addition to any part shade to full shade garden setting. A smaller growing fern, this colorful plant matures in the 16 to 20 inch height range and is a non-spreader, so it is a behaved fern and stays put.

The beautifully formed arching fern with triangular shaped foliage runs the colors of red, green and silver with stems that reach a deep burgundy red. The Red Beauty Fern is heat hardy into zone 9, plus the foliage doesn't turn back to green during hot summer temperatures.

Plant in containers near shady patio, deck and other sitting areas to enjoy the spicy fragrance of the Red Beauty Fern.

As with most ferns, this plant is deciduous and dies back with cooling fall temperatures and the first frost. Withered foliage can be clipped back to the ground in fall or winter.
