Hello Greenwood Friends,
June Member Announcement: Deep Roots & Summer Resilience
June is where early summer takes the leadβdays reach their maximum length, temperatures climb, and the garden transitions from rapid spring growth into sustaining its beauty. Across Zones 3 through 9, this is the critical month for moisture management, root support, and protecting the investments youβve planted over the spring.
Whether you are anchoring new additions before the peak heat arrives or maintaining the lush canopy of your established landscape, June is all about smart watering, strategic mulching, and keeping your garden resilient, vibrant, and thriving all summer long.
June Garden Checklist (Zones 3β9)
Essential care for trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers & evergreens
Zones 3β4: Peak Spring-into-Summer Rush
- πΏ Plant with Confidence: This is your prime window to plant hardy shrubs, evergreens, and vibrant perennials while the soil is warm but the air is mild.
- πΏ Establish Groundcovers: Tuck in groundcovers now so they can spread rapidly and carpet the soil before the hottest days arrive.
- πΏ Mulch Early: Apply a clean, 2-to-3-inch layer of mulch around new root zones to lock in precious spring moisture.
Zones 5β6: Mid-Season Maintenance & Care
- πΏ Transition to Deep Watering: Shift from frequent shallow watering to deep, less frequent soaking to encourage roots to grow down deep where the soil stays cool.
- πΏ Protect New Additions: Keep a close eye on any trees or shrubs planted this spring; ensure they get consistent moisture as afternoon temperatures rise.
- πΏ Groom Perennials: Clean up the faded blooms of early-spring perennials to encourage a clean habit and potential secondary late-summer color.
Zones 7β8: Heat-Smart Adjustments
- πΏ Audit Your Mulch: Check established beds and top off mulch rings around trees and shrubs to shield roots from scorching soil temperatures.
- πΏ Prune Spring-Blooming Shrubs: Now is the time to prune early-season bloomers (like certain azaleas or weigela) immediately after their flowers fade, before they set next year's buds.
- πΏ Rely on Groundcovers: Let your groundcovers do the heavy liftingβdense beds of creeping phlox or sedum act as a living mulch, keeping weed pressure low and soil cool.
Zone 9: Summer Shield & Hydration
- πΏ Master the Morning Water: Water deeply during the early morning hours to minimize evaporation and give plants the hydration they need to survive midday stress.
- πΏ Prioritize Tough Evergreens: Focus any new planting on exceptionally heat-tolerant, drought-tough evergreens and native shrubs that embrace the summer sun.
- πΏ Provide Temporary Shade: For newly integrated or tender perennials, a little afternoon dappled shade or temporary screen can help them transition through their first June intense heat.
