Pink Creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata) — High-Density Floral Matrix for Soil Stabilization & Sun-Baked Slopes
The Master Grower's Overview
Engineered by nature to transform barren, sun-scalded terrains into a flawless, vibrant living carpet where traditional turfgrasses perish, Pink Creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata) is the industry standard for low-profile, high-impact soil management. At Greenwood Nursery, we cultivate our Creeping Phlox to optimize rapid lateral stem extension and dense nodal rooting, ensuring that when mass-planted, these premium plugs quickly knit together into a robust, interlocking evergreen mat. Reaching a disciplined mature height of just 4 to 6 inches with an aggressive 12- to 18-inch trailing spread per plant, this absolute workhorse variety is specifically grown to handle severe erosion control on steep banks, anchor shifting rocky soil profiles, and suppress persistent weed seed germination in full-sun trouble spots.
Nursery-Grade Technical Attributes
- High-Density Soil Stabilization: Spreads via prostrate, creeping stems that root at every point of ground contact, anchoring loose topsoil and providing exceptional erosion control on steep banks, retaining walls, and drainage cuts.
- Prohibitive Foliage Canopy: The thick, needle-like evergreen foliage forms a dense, weed-suppressing mat that blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface, naturally starving out opportunistic weeds year-round.
- Early-Season Pollinator Support: Punctuated from early to mid-spring by an explosive, uniform flush of vibrant, pinwheel-shaped pink flowers that completely blanket the foliage, offering crucial early-season forage for native bees and early butterflies.
- Varmint & Browser Resistance: Features a tough, leathery leaf texture and natural resilience that makes the plant highly unpalatable to deer and rabbits, securing your investment in exposed rural landscapes or open woodland borders.
Cultivation & Planting Infrastructure
- Solar & Spatial Parameters: Performs with maximum efficiency across USDA Hardiness Zones 3–9. It requires full sun to achieve its heaviest bloom density and to maintain its characteristically tight, low-profile growth velocity.
- Soil Matrix & Drainage: Uniquely adapted to marginal or poor soil profiles, thriving in sharply drained, rocky, or sandy substrates. Excellent drainage is absolute to prevent root crown rot during heavy seasonal rains.
- Professional Spacing Grid: For rapid, single-season infill and complete coverage, install starter pots on strict 12-inch centers. For large-scale acreage or budget-conscious projects, a 15- to 18-inch grid pattern will achieve a full, interlocking carpet within two growing seasons.
- Establishment Hydration Protocol: Provide steady, routine moisture during the initial root deployment phase. Once the root architecture binds with your local soil matrix, Pink Creeping Phlox exhibits outstanding, self-sustaining drought and heat tolerance.
- Post-Bloom Rejuvenation: For commercial landscapes or manicured borders, lightly shearing the foliage mat immediately after the spring bloom encourages a dense flush of fresh evergreen growth and maintains a tight, clean geometric profile.

How Your Plants Are Shipped & Care Instructions
To ensure a seamless transition to your garden, please follow the specific steps below based on the type of plant you ordered:
📦 1. Container-Grown Plants
Our container-grown plants are shipped with fully established root systems nestled in premium potting media.
- Unpack & Water Instantly: Carefully remove the protective packaging and check the soil moisture. Give the pot a thorough watering until moisture runs out the bottom drainage holes.
- Acclimation Period: Place your container plant in a sheltered, partially shaded location for 2 to 3 days to help it recover from transit before moving it to full sun.
- Planting Depth: Plant at the exact same depth it was sitting in its shipping container, gently loosening the outer roots if they are encircling the root ball.
- Moisture Control: Keep the soil consistently damp but never soggy for the first few weeks as the roots expand.
🌱 2. Seedling & Liner Bare-Root Plants
Seedlings and liners are young, vibrant plants shipped without pots to make transit highly efficient.
- Immediate Attention: Unpack immediately upon arrival. If you cannot plant them right away, keep the roots moist and store them in a cool, shaded location out of the wind.
- Hydration First: Soak the roots in a bucket of water for 1 to 2 hours right before planting to wake them up.
- Planting: Spread the roots out naturally in the planting hole. Ensure the crown (where the roots meet the stem) sits right at the soil level. Water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.
🌾 3. Groundcover Bare-Root Plants
Groundcover bare-root bundles (like Vinca minor or Sedum) are shipped dormant or semi-dormant, ready to take off once in the ground.
- Check Moisture: Open the bundle immediately. The packing material around the roots should be damp. If planting is delayed a day or two, lightly mist the roots to keep them from drying out.
- Soak Before Planting: Soak the root systems in water for about an hour before putting them in the ground.
- Spacing & Depth: Plant them at the same depth they were growing previously, firming the soil gently over the roots to eliminate any air pockets. Water heavily right after planting and keep the area consistently moist until established.
