Description

Very Van Gogh Veronica - Spike Speedwell

The Very Van Gogh Veronica takes veronicas to a new level of color. The long blooming spiky flowers will vary in shades of pink to purple, depending on the time of day, lighting and surrounding plants. With a good cut back after their first blooming around mid summer, this plant will bloom again and equally strong.

I planted this Veronica in my new garden space because of its name. In our household, we're very much into artist and music. For its first season, it grew faster than I anticipated. The pictures above are from the Very Van Gogh's in my garden. As medium growers, the plants will grow taller and wider next spring and summer. The long spiky pink to purple flowers are so graceful in the summer breezes. Once the first blooming session calmed down, I cut the plants back to about 4 inches above the ground. A few weeks later, new green foliage began and, then within a month new blooms were there for a late summer color show.

This perennial has quickly become my favorite. Early next spring, I'll be adding a few more to my garden along with excellent companion plants which I have in my other garden areas around the house.

Add in snowcap shasta daisy as it is shorter growing than the Becky Daisy. The Mellow Yellows Echinacea are the perfect choice to add lots of varied golds to contract the pink-purple of the Very Van Gogh Veronica. The blackeyed susans are a good choice, too, but have a tendency to grow larger and can be overwhelming for the perfection of this veronica.
