Fast Growing Chestnut Trees -

You'll love our fast growing chestnut tree. Our Celestial Chestnut Tree is a cross between the American and Chinese Chestnuts that is fast growing and early nut producer. On average, the Celestial Chestnut begins bearing fruit or nuts in 3 to 5 years and found to be producing up to 20 pounds of nuts per tree by the time they are 8 to 10 years old. Plus, they have a wonderfully sweet chestnut flavor that is out of this world!

Buy Chestnut Trees For Your Timber Plantatation!

The Celestial Chestnut Tree is from an orchard originally planted with chestnut trees purchased from Dr. Dunstan approximately 50 years ago. Over the years, these trees cross pollinated. They were observed for certain characteristics such as fast growth and nut production. The trees that showed excellence in these characteristics were sectioned off. Seeds were taken from these 'best of the best' over several tree generations, so that today we offer this new American Chinese Hybrid Chestnut, the Celestial Chestnut, as a faster grower and nut producer vs the original Dunstan parentage.

Whether you're growing the Celestial Chestnut Tree as a tree for plantation timber or an orchard for nut production, it is sure to add value to your project. Greenwood makes it simple to produce a tree for sale near you.

Growing the New Celestial Chestnut

Mail order nursery trees and potted new trees need to be planted as quickly as possible once they arrive. The first step is digging the proper hole to set the new tree’s roots and base into. With potted trees, dig the hole twice as wide as the pot but same depth as the tree in the pot. If you’re planting bare root stock, dig a hole that’s twice as wide and deep as the root system.

Next, for pot grown chestnuts, remove the tree from the pot whole if you can. Use your hand to gently loosen the root ball and soil among the roots. Gently place the tree into the hole and replace the space in the hole with the same soil you dug out. Do not use amendments. For bare root, hold the tree with the crown level to the soil surface around the hole. Gently replace the soil in the hole with the native soil you dug with your hands. Try to keep the roots spread and in their natural position as you replace the soil. Once your tree is in the ground and the soil is replaced, use any leftover dirt to create a gentle circle berm around the planting site. Gently use your foot and weight around the tree to push down the new soil removing as many air pockets in the ground as you can. Use mulch on the planting site making sure to keep the mulch away from the crown of the new tree. Use mulches that break down fast while keep away competing weeds, such as pine needles and shredded fall leaves.

Stake and protect new planted trees as necessary. There isn’t one perfect way to do this. We offer miracle tube tree protectors that keep rodents and other wildlife from sampling your new tree’s bark which could potentially kill the tree. Staking and protecting new trees in this way is incredibly important.

Water your new tree as needed by checking the planting site weekly. If the top inch of soil is dry, water the site. If it’s not dry, do not water.

Do not fertilize new trees the first year as they establish themselves. They need this first year to adapt to the new soil they’re planted in and establish their roots into it, and fertilizing often impedes this adaptive growth by encouraging new trees to grow top growth before they’ve developed root systems to support the growth above the soil line.

Once Celestial Chestnuts are established after the first or second year, you can begin a light fertilization routine and back off on the watering. You’ll notice good growth after the first couple of years. Your Celestial Chestnut will begin to bear fruit after this time, and with good care it should begin producing in abundance.
